Choosing the correct bulb cap

The first step is to identify the cap or base required by the fitting. A bulb with the wrong cap will not connect, even if its size and appearance seem suitable.

E27 is a large Edison screw fitting commonly used in pendants, table lamps and floor lights. E14 is the smaller version and often appears in compact lamps, candle fittings and decorative designs. B22 and B15 are bayonet caps in large and small sizes. Other fittings may require GU10, G9, G4, GX53 or a more specialised bulb.

The product information for the light should state the required cap and maximum wattage. If you are replacing an existing bulb, the cap type may also be printed on its body. Match the specification exactly rather than relying on appearance alone.

Some fittings have limited space inside the shade or diffuser. Check the bulb’s length and diameter as well as the cap type, particularly when choosing a large globe, elongated tube or decorative teardrop shape.

LED light bulbs and energy efficiency

Modern LED light bulbs produce useful illumination while consuming less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs. They also generally last longer, reducing the need for frequent replacement. This makes LED lighting a practical choice for fittings used regularly throughout the home.

Because LEDs use less power, wattage is no longer the best way to compare brightness. Lumens measure how much visible light a bulb produces. Two bulbs with similar wattages may have different lumen outputs, so check both figures when selecting a replacement.

A lower lumen output can work well in a decorative table lamp or exposed fitting intended to create atmosphere. Higher output may be required for general ceiling illumination or task lighting. The shade, diffuser and direction of the fitting will also affect how bright the light feels once installed.

Some designer fittings include integrated LEDs and do not require a separate bulb. Where a replaceable lamp is needed, follow the manufacturer’s recommendation to achieve the intended light distribution and prevent compatibility issues.

Understanding colour temperature

Colour temperature describes whether the light appears warm or cool and is measured in kelvins. Lower kelvin values produce warmer, more golden light, while higher values create a cooler, clearer appearance.

Warm white bulbs are commonly used in living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms because they create a relaxed atmosphere. A clearer neutral white may suit kitchens, home offices or other spaces where visibility and task performance are important.

The choice should relate to the room, materials and time of use. Warm light complements timber, brass and richly coloured fabrics, while neutral light can work well with pale stone and contemporary surfaces. Very cool light may feel clinical in domestic living spaces unless it serves a particular practical purpose.

Try to keep the colour temperature consistent across lights used together. Noticeably different bulb colours within the same room can make the lighting scheme feel unbalanced. Dim-to-warm bulbs provide another option, becoming warmer in appearance as the brightness is reduced.

Decorative and filament light bulbs

When the bulb is visible, it becomes part of the design. Decorative light bulbs are intended to contribute shape, texture and character as well as illumination. Globe, candle, oval, tube, teardrop and organic forms can change the appearance of a simple pendant or lamp holder.

Filament light bulbs recreate the visual appeal of traditional incandescent filaments using more efficient LED technology. Clear glass provides a crisp view of the filament, while tinted or smoked glass creates a warmer, more atmospheric effect. Opal bulbs conceal the internal components and diffuse light more evenly.

Consider the proportions of the fitting when selecting a decorative bulb. A large globe can give a minimal lamp holder greater presence, but it may overwhelm a small shade. An elongated bulb works well in a tall glass enclosure, while a compact golf-ball shape may suit a smaller table or wall light.

The brightness also matters. An exposed decorative bulb that is too bright can cause glare, particularly when positioned close to eye level. A lower output, tinted glass or dimming control may create a more comfortable result.

Dimmable light bulbs

Dimmable light bulbs allow the output to be adjusted for different activities and times of day. Brighter light may be useful for reading, cooking or cleaning, while a lower setting creates a softer atmosphere in the evening.

The bulb, fitting and dimmer must all be compatible. A bulb marked as non-dimmable should not be used with a dimmer switch. Even when an LED bulb is described as dimmable, an incompatible control can cause flickering, buzzing, limited adjustment or failure to switch off correctly.

Older dimmers designed for traditional incandescent lamps may not work effectively with modern low-wattage LEDs. If you are updating several bulbs or experiencing poor performance, ask a qualified electrician whether the existing dimmer is suitable for LED lighting.

Dim-to-warm bulbs change colour temperature as well as brightness, producing a warmer glow at lower levels. These can be particularly effective in bedrooms, dining rooms and living spaces where the lighting needs to move between practical and relaxed settings.

Selecting brightness for different rooms

The correct brightness depends on the size of the room, the purpose of the fitting and the surrounding surfaces. A single pendant used as the main light source will usually need a different output from a bedside lamp or decorative wall light.

Dark walls, matt finishes and heavy fabrics absorb more light, while pale walls, mirrors and glossy surfaces reflect it. Enclosed shades and diffusers can also reduce the amount of light reaching the room, so the same bulb may appear brighter in an open fitting.

Task lighting should provide enough illumination for the activity without creating glare. A reading lamp needs a focused pool of light, while a pendant above a dining table should illuminate the surface and still feel comfortable for people seated around it.

Layering several sources often produces a better result than relying on one very bright bulb. Ceiling, wall, floor and table lighting can then be controlled separately, allowing the atmosphere to change throughout the day.

Bulb shape, glass finish and light distribution

The bulb’s shape and finish affect how light travels from the fitting. Clear bulbs allow direct illumination and show the filament, making them suitable where the lamp is intended to be seen. Opal bulbs soften the light and help reduce glare. Tinted glass adds warmth but may reduce the amount of usable light.

A globe bulb distributes light differently from a directional spotlight. GU10 bulbs commonly provide a focused beam, while standard GLS and globe shapes offer broader illumination. Beam angle is especially important for spotlights used to highlight artwork, architectural details or work surfaces.

Before ordering, check whether the bulb will be visible and whether the fitting requires a particular shape. Some shades depend on a specific bulb position to distribute light correctly. Others are designed around a distinctive decorative lamp, so changing its size or finish can alter the appearance of the entire light.
