&Tradition Thorvald Garden Furniture Collection

&Tradition Thorvald Garden Furniture Collection

The &Tradition Thorvald Garden Furniture Collection brings sculptural form and practical outdoor living together. Designed by Space Copenhagen, the range includes garden chairs, lounge chairs, benches, sofas, café tables, coffee tables and dining tables. Coordinating cushions and curated furniture sets make it possible to create anything from a compact balcony arrangement to a complete outdoor dining and lounge space.

Thorvald takes its name and inspiration from Bertel Thorvaldsen, the Danish neoclassical sculptor whose work is housed at Thorvaldsens Museum in Copenhagen. The museum’s architecture, repeated patterns and play between light and shadow informed the collection’s curved frames and open grid surfaces.

Despite its historic reference, Thorvald has a distinctly contemporary appearance. Powder-coated steel gives each piece a clear structure, while rounded outlines soften the overall form. The grid detailing allows sunlight to pass through the furniture, casting changing shadows across patios, paving and terraces throughout the day.

The range forms part of the wider &Tradition garden furniture collection, which applies the Danish brand’s approach to design, materials and everyday use to outdoor spaces.

Designed by Space Copenhagen

Space Copenhagen was founded by Signe Bindslev Henriksen and Peter Bundgaard Rützou. The studio works across furniture, lighting, interiors and hospitality projects, with designs that often balance clear architectural forms with natural materials and tactile detail.

The designers describe their approach as poetic modernism. Within the Thorvald collection, this can be seen in the contrast between solid steel frames and lighter grid surfaces. Every piece has a practical purpose, but the repeated lines, curves and shadows give the collection an expressive quality.

Thorvald Garden Chairs and Lounge Seating

Thorvald dining chairs are available in versions with and without arms. Their curved backs and perforated grid seats provide support while maintaining an open appearance. Selected chairs can be stacked, making them easier to store and useful where an outdoor space must remain flexible.

For more relaxed seating, the range includes lounge chairs with a lower sitting position. These work beside a coffee table or as part of a wider outdoor lounge arrangement. The Thorvald garden lounge sofa offers space for two people while preserving the collection’s light visual profile.

Dining and lounge benches provide an alternative to individual chairs. A bench can accommodate several people without dividing the table into fixed seating positions, which is useful for informal gatherings and family meals. It can also be positioned independently against a garden wall or beside a path.

Matching seat pads and cushions add a softer layer to the steel construction. Check that the cushion is made for the relevant Thorvald model, as the shape and size differ between chairs, benches and the lounge sofa. Store cushions somewhere dry when they are not in use.

Thorvald Garden Tables

The Thorvald collection includes tables for different outdoor spaces and uses. Small round and square café tables suit balconies, courtyards and compact patios. They can be paired with two chairs to create an outdoor place for coffee, breakfast or informal meals.

Larger garden dining tables provide space for family dining and entertaining. The collection includes round and rectangular options, allowing the table shape to be matched to the proportions of the area. A round table encourages conversation and works well in square spaces, while a rectangular table can make efficient use of a longer terrace.

Low coffee tables complete the lounge furniture. Their grid surfaces continue the visual language of the seating and allow water to pass through rather than collecting on a solid top. Position one between lounge chairs or in front of the Thorvald garden sofa to create a practical outdoor seating area.

Thorvald Garden Furniture Sets

Choosing a coordinated set can simplify planning an outdoor space. Holloways of Ludlow has brought together Thorvald pieces in combinations designed for balconies, patios, dining areas and relaxed seating spaces.

Compact bistro and balcony sets combine a small table with seating for two people. Dining sets provide more places around larger tables, while lounge sets use lower seating and coffee tables to create an informal arrangement. The individual pieces share the same finishes and design details, creating a consistent result.

Before selecting a set, measure the full available area rather than the table alone. Allow enough clearance to pull out chairs and move around them comfortably. On a balcony, check access, door openings and any relevant weight restrictions. For a dining table, consider where serving space, planters and other outdoor features will sit.

Powder-Coated Steel for Outdoor Use

Thorvald furniture is made from powder-coated steel. The finish provides a durable surface and gives the collection its even colour. Steel also allows the frames and grid sections to remain relatively slender while retaining their strength.

Regular care will help preserve the finish. Remove loose dirt with a soft brush or cloth, then clean the surface using water and a mild detergent. Avoid abrasive pads and harsh chemical cleaners, as these can damage the coating. Any chips or scratches should be addressed promptly to reduce the risk of corrosion.

During prolonged periods of severe weather, store the furniture in a dry, ventilated place or use a suitable breathable cover. Avoid leaving covers sealed tightly around damp furniture, as trapped moisture can encourage condensation. In coastal areas, rinse away salt deposits regularly and inspect the finish more frequently.

Thorvald is available in a considered palette that includes warm black, bronze green and ivory. Darker finishes can create a defined outline against pale paving, while bronze green sits naturally alongside planting. Ivory can lighten a shaded courtyard or bring contrast to darker brick and stone.

Styling the Thorvald Collection

Thorvald’s combination of café references and sculptural detailing makes it suitable for different types of outdoor space. In a small urban courtyard, a round café table with two chairs creates a practical dining area without filling the entire footprint. On a larger terrace, a dining table and benches can provide generous seating while keeping the layout visually open.

The furniture works well against natural stone, patterned tiles and timber decking. Because the grid surfaces reveal the material beneath them, the ground treatment becomes part of the composition. Planting with soft foliage can contrast with the steel framework, while clipped or architectural plants reinforce its structured form.

The collection is equally relevant to residential gardens and hospitality-inspired settings. See how the designs work in a commercial outdoor environment in our feature on &Tradition Thorvald furniture at Coret Coffee in Bath.

Adding Outdoor Lighting

Outdoor lighting extends the use of a dining or lounge area after sunset. Portable lamps can be moved between a table, bench and lounge area without requiring permanent wiring. Explore our rechargeable outdoor lamps for cordless designs suited to flexible outdoor layouts.

The &Tradition VP Flowerpot collection includes portable lighting that can introduce colour and a rounded counterpoint to Thorvald’s grid structure. Always check the individual product’s suitability for outdoor use and follow its charging and storage guidance.
