Variety of Styles for a Variety of Spaces
A long pendant light is one of the most versatile lighting fixtures. Most commonly used in open spaces, linear pendant lighting can help illuminate a variety of different rooms, including the kitchen, dining room and study.
For those looking to enhance statement design elements in their kitchen, we recommend our selection of linear pendant lighting for the kitchen island. Kitchen pendant lighting is a great way to provide task lighting in specific areas of your home, while also leaving you with ample space to prepare your food. The Nuura Anoli Spot Track linear pendant, for example, has reconfigurable spotlights that can be adjusted depending on the task at hand.
Many homeowners also like to install linear pendant lights above their breakfast bar. For those without a separate kitchen table, these fixtures can be used to define different functional areas in your room and separate your dining space from the preparation area.
A linear pendant light can provide just as much of a design statement as a source of illumination, particularly for those looking for a fixture to hang above their dining table - but want something a little more low-key than our chandeliers and large installations. For a design that stands out while also naturally integrating into any interior and style of a room, look no further than our Halo Circular Pendant and eye-catching lighting installation.
Whether you’ve got a separate home office, or like to set up in the kitchen or dining room, the right lighting is essential to productivity when working from home. If you find that a single pendant light isn’t enough to fully focus, a long pendant light can be a great alternative. Our Concrete Linear Pendant, for example, merges fine wood and metals to create a fixture perfectly suited for illuminating a long dining table, sideboard or desk.
Modern Linear Pendant Lighting
Our statement fixtures at Holloways of Ludlow can take any contemporary interior to the next level. From industrial-style to visually striking, explore our modern linear pendant fixtures and find your next exquisite centrepiece today.
For homeowners wishing to add a touch of elegance to their home, we recommend our Florii 5 Linear Pendant by Nuura. Designed with a keen eye for detail, this long pendant light features a streamlined form with five elegantly aligned lamps inspired by flowers. Alternatively, our Respiro Linear Pendant brightens up any dining table or kitchen island by shining light through aluminium pages, creating the illusion of a book halfway through being read.
LED Linear Pendant Lighting
Many fixtures in our collection of linear pendant lighting use LED bulbs. Not only are these more energy efficient and longer lasting than incandescent bulbs, but their warm glow creates a soft and inviting atmosphere in any room of your home. Our D'Armes Ra Line Pendant Light, for example, is one of our many glass pendant lights that ensure a perfect balance between functionality and aesthetics using LED tubes, delicately encased in hand-bent glass.

What is a linear pendant light?
A linear pendant light is an elongated ceiling fitting designed to spread illumination across a wider surface. Unlike a single pendant, which usually concentrates light in one area, linear pendant lighting provides more even coverage along a dining table, kitchen island, breakfast bar or desk.
Linear suspension lights are available as single continuous fittings or as arrangements containing several light sources. Their horizontal proportions make them particularly suitable for long or rectangular surfaces.
Are linear pendant lights suitable for kitchen islands?
Yes. Linear pendant lights are a practical choice for kitchen islands because they distribute light along the length of the worktop. They can provide useful task lighting for food preparation while creating a clear visual focal point within the kitchen.
Choose a fitting that is proportionate to the island and does not obstruct views across the room. For more overhead options designed for this part of the home, explore our kitchen pendant lights.
How large should a linear pendant be over a dining table?
The pendant should feel balanced with the dining table without extending beyond its edges or overwhelming the room. A longer table can accommodate a substantial linear suspension light, while a compact table will usually suit a shorter and more restrained design.
Check the complete width and depth of both the table and light before ordering. You should also consider the size of the room, ceiling height and any surrounding furniture to ensure the fitting remains visually balanced.
How high should a linear pendant light hang?
A linear pendant should hang low enough to illuminate the surface effectively but high enough to avoid obstructing views or creating glare. The appropriate height will depend on the ceiling, the dimensions of the fitting and whether it is positioned above a dining table, kitchen island or open area.
Many designer linear pendant lights include an adjustable suspension, allowing the drop to be adapted during installation. Always check the product specifications and ask a qualified electrician or installer for guidance before fitting.
Which styles of linear pendant lighting are available?
Linear pendant lighting is available in styles ranging from minimal and architectural to sculptural and decorative. Contemporary linear pendant lights often feature streamlined metal frames, exposed light sources or integrated LEDs, while more decorative designs may incorporate glass, brass or carefully formed shades.
Luxury linear pendant lights can become a defining feature above a dining table or kitchen island, even when switched off. Choose a material and finish that complements nearby furniture, cabinet hardware and other lighting in the room.
Can linear pendant lights be installed on sloped ceilings?
Some linear pendants can be installed on sloped ceilings, but this depends on the ceiling canopy, suspension system and individual product design. Fittings suspended from adjustable cables may offer greater flexibility, although the light must still hang level above the surface.
Review the installation information for the specific product and consult a qualified electrician before purchasing if your ceiling is angled, unusually high or has other installation restrictions.
